Project Objective

The Food Pantry’s mission is to assist students by providing basic necessities such as food and toiletries to alleviate insecurities within the campus community.

This project was to rethink the CSUN Food Pantry brand to design engaging visuals that better communicate the brand’s key message while maintaining consistency with CSUN With A Heart and CSUN’s design guidelines. The overall design should welcome students to the CSUN Food Pantry to acquire the resources they are seeking.

The Process

The current brand lacks a strong visual identity so I began with the logo, which was a vector illustration that did not clearly represent the CSUN Food Pantry and is not brand-able logo design.

There are a few concepts where I explored having the pantry bag incorporated with type but it was challenging because it was not utilizing the space effectively. I also did sketches were it was mainly type which helped it be distinguishable. It brought out more of CSUN’s characteristics with the typeface and CSUN logo.

In the final direction, I decided to move forward with the concept that was mainly type driven to maximize legibility. By creating a type lockup with small, unique graphic elements, it helps the logo present as clean and minimal while also being easily distinguishable.

Thank you!

After implementing the redesigned brand visuals in print collateral, web graphics, and social media content, the CSUN Food Pantry had a 40% increase in student visitors and food donations within a semester.

With a boost in visitors and donations, the Food Pantry expanded methods to assist students by creating a Pop-Up Pantry which provides fresh produce on selected days during the semester. With our launch campaign that consisted of a fresh yet consistent design to Food Pantry, it brought 1,125 students to the first 4 pop-ups in one semester and is a continuing event.
